Standard Operating Procedure for Equipment Cleaning and Sanitization

1. Purpose

This procedure establishes consistent methods for cleaning and sanitizing production equipment to prevent contamination and cross-contamination between batches.

2. Scope

This SOP applies to all equipment used in the production of soap and cosmetic products, including mixing vessels, utensils, measuring tools, and filling equipment.

3. Materials Required

4. Cleaning Procedures by Equipment Type

4.1 Mixing Vessels (Stainless Steel, Glass)

  1. Rinse immediately after use to prevent residue from hardening
  2. Wash with hot water and dish soap
  3. Scrub with clean sponge to remove all residue
  4. Rinse thoroughly with clean water
  5. For water-containing products: Sanitize with 70% alcohol spray
  6. Air dry or dry with clean lint-free towel
  7. Store inverted or covered to prevent dust contamination

4.2 Utensils (Spatulas, Spoons, Whisks)

  1. Scrape off excess product
  2. Wash with hot soapy water
  3. Pay attention to crevices and handle connections
  4. Rinse thoroughly
  5. Sanitize if used for water-containing products
  6. Air dry completely before storing

4.3 Scales

  1. Wipe platform with damp cloth
  2. Clean any spills immediately to prevent damage
  3. Wipe with dry cloth
  4. Do not submerge in water
  5. Check zero calibration weekly

4.4 Thermometers

  1. Wipe probe with damp cloth
  2. Sanitize probe with alcohol if used in products
  3. Do not submerge digital displays
  4. Store in protective case

4.5 Immersion Blenders/Stick Blenders

  1. Unplug before cleaning
  2. Detach blade assembly if possible
  3. Wash blade in hot soapy water (careful of sharp edges)
  4. Wipe motor body with damp cloth only
  5. Dry completely before reassembly

5. Sanitization Requirements

Product Type Sanitization Required? Method
Anhydrous (balms, soap) Recommended 70% alcohol spray, air dry
Water-containing (lotions, creams) Required 70% alcohol spray, air dry
Eye-area products Required 70% alcohol + sterile conditions
Important: Never use equipment that shows signs of rust, cracks, or damage that prevents thorough cleaning. Replace damaged equipment promptly.
