How to Add Custom Fragrance Oils
Create your own fragrance oil entries in the IFRA calculator for accurate compliance calculations
Our IFRA calculator includes 300+ essential oils with known compositions. However, fragrance oils are proprietary blends unique to each supplier. To calculate IFRA compliance for fragrance oils, you'll need to enter their specific components from your supplier's documentation.
This guide will teach you how to read SDS and chromatography reports, identify IFRA-regulated components, and add custom fragrance oils to the calculator.
What You'll Need
Obtain one of the following documents from your fragrance oil supplier:
SDS (Safety Data Sheet):
Most suppliers provide this upon request. It lists hazardous components and their concentration ranges. This is the minimum documentation you need.
GC-MS / Chromatography Report:
A detailed analysis showing all volatile compounds and their exact percentages. Premium suppliers often provide these. More comprehensive than SDS.
Note: IFRA certificates show maximum usage rates but don't list individual components—you can't use them alone for this process.
If your supplier doesn't provide documentation, contact them directly or consider switching to a supplier with better transparency.
Step 1: Open the IFRA Calculator
Navigate to the IFRA Calculator tab.
Click the "+ Add Custom Fragrance Oil" button located in the oil selection area. This opens a form where you can enter your fragrance oil's details.
Step 2: Review Your Supplier Documentation
Open your SDS or chromatography report and look for the composition/ingredients section. You'll typically see entries like:
Not all listed components are IFRA-regulated. Only those appearing in the IFRA standards library need to be entered.
Step 3: Search for Each Component
For each component on your documentation, use the component search in the custom oil form:
- Search by CAS Number: Enter the CAS number exactly as shown (e.g., "5989-27-5" for Limonene). This is the most accurate method.
- Search by Chemical Name: Type the component name (e.g., "Limonene", "Linalool"). Some names may vary, so try common synonyms if needed.
If a component doesn't appear in search results: It's not an IFRA-regulated aromatic compound and can be omitted. Many fragrance components (solvents, carriers, non-aromatic chemicals) are not regulated by IFRA.
Step 4: Enter the Highest Percentage
When your documentation shows a concentration range (e.g., "3.0 - 5.0%"), always enter the highest value (5.0% in this example).
Why use the highest value? This ensures your IFRA calculations represent the worst-case scenario, keeping you safely within compliance limits regardless of batch-to-batch variations.
After selecting a component from search results, enter its concentration percentage and click "Add Component".
Step 5: Repeat for All Regulated Components
Continue adding each IFRA-regulated component from your documentation. Common regulated compounds include:
- • Limonene
- • Linalool
- • Citronellol
- • Geraniol
- • Eugenol
- • Coumarin
- • Citral
- • Benzyl benzoate
- • Isoeugenol
- • Farnesol
Don't worry if you can't find every component—only IFRA-regulated ones affect your compliance calculations.
Step 6: Save and Use Your Custom Oil
Once you've added all regulated components:
- Give your fragrance oil a descriptive name (e.g., "Supplier X - Lavender Dreams")
- Optionally add notes about the batch or date
- Click "Save Custom Oil"
Your custom fragrance oil will now appear in the oil selection dropdown. To use it in a blend:
- Select your custom oil from the dropdown
- Enter the percentage it represents in your blend
- Click "Add to Blend"
- The calculator will include its components in IFRA compliance calculations
Pro tip: Create a custom oil entry for each fragrance oil you regularly use. This saves time on future blend calculations and ensures consistent compliance checking.
