How to Make Oil Serums

For Body, Face & Hair

An oil serum is a blend of carrier oils, active oils, and sometimes essential oils designed to nourish and treat skin or hair. Unlike solid balms, oil serums are 100% liquid and absorb directly into the skin without any wax barrier. Oil serums can target specific concerns like aging, dryness, acne, or dull hair, making them highly customizable for individual needs.

Because they lack water, oil serums do not require traditional broad-spectrum preservatives. However, they are highly susceptible to oxidation. Successful oil serum formulation is less about chemistry and more about matching the fatty acid profile of your oils to the specific needs of the skin or hair being treated.

Standard Composition

PhasePurposeTypical %
Base/Carrier OilsCore moisturizing vehicle85–98%
Active/Specialty OilsTargeted treatment benefits1–10%
Essential OilsScent + therapeutic effects0.5–2%
AntioxidantPrevents oil rancidity0.1–0.5%

Heat Sensitivity and Oxidation

Most oil serums can be blended cold, which is ideal as many high-value active oils are heat-sensitive. PUFA-rich oils like Rosehip, Hemp, and Evening Primrose are fragile and should not be heated above 104°F (40°C).

Antioxidants are required to extend shelf life significantly by preventing the chain reaction of oil rancidity. BalmMath analyzes your oil blend's fatty acid profile and calculates the type and amount needed — T50, T95, rosemary oleoresin (ROE), or BHT.

Manufacturing Steps

1

Combine Carriers

Weigh your base carrier oils and specialty oils into a sanitized stainless steel beaker.
2

Add Heat-Sensitive Actives

Ensure the temperature is below 104°F (40°C) before adding your antioxidant, CO2 extracts, or fragile specialty oils.
3

Add Essential Oils

Stir in your fragrance or therapeutic essential oils last. Mix gently but thoroughly for 2-3 minutes.
4

Bottle Immediately

Fill dark glass bottles to minimize headspace, which reduces the amount of oxygen trapped inside.
5

Label and Store

Store finished serums in a cool, dark place. Refrigeration is recommended for PUFA-heavy face serums.

Pro Tip

Sea buckthorn oil (5-10%) adds powerful antioxidants and brightening carotenoids, but will turn your formula bright orange — this is expected and washes off skin. Use sparingly on fair skin or at nighttime to avoid temporary staining.

Troubleshooting

If…Then…Solution
Oil feels too greasy on skinCarrier oils are too heavy or slow-absorbingIncrease lightweight oils like Squalane, Jojoba, or FCO; decrease Avocado or Olive oil.
Scent disappears quicklyFragrance is mostly top notesAdd more base notes (Sandalwood, Vanilla, Patchouli) to fix the scent.
Oil develops a 'crayony' smellThe oils have oxidized (gone rancid)Discard. Use fresh oils and ensure you add the recommended level of antioxidant (ROE or Tocopherol).
